Innovative Advancement in the Last 50 Years – Does Recycling Have a Place?

Written by Jon Earnshaw | May 20, 2019 9:32:19 PM

Technological advancements are often developed in order to meet a problem or an opportunity. In the world of business, technology can be used in a number of ways, to help improve customer care, transportation, business communication and even employee efficiency. However, while most business owners and managers readily acknowledge the importance of innovative technology within the workplace, when it comes to advancements in recycling, many businesses seem to be stuck in the seventies.

That being the case, let’s take a look at some innovative advancements within the last 50 years, including developments in waste management and how these modern improvements can significantly help increase business efficiency.

Cars

Many may appreciate classic cars like the iconic Ford Capri and although a supercar back in the 1970s, no doubt you’d agree that motor technology has rapidly advanced and the power and efficiency of today’s cars have drastically improved. Founded back in 2003, Tesla motors are the epitome of modern technology. They produced their first all-electric car in 2008 and boast an unbelievable efficiency rating of 88% – compared to only 20-25% for traditional petrol-powered cars.

In fact, the Government are considering incentives to encourage New Zealander corporates to switch their fleet vehicles to electric cars. Not only do businesses recognise health and environmental benefits but EV’s also mean eliminating fuel costs and significantly reducing maintenance budgets – with only 20 moving parts in the average electric vehicle.

Telephones

Mobile phones are commonplace in today’s world – in fact, it’s estimated that as many as 90% of the population in NZ use a smartphone. But, it wasn’t until 1973 that Martin Cooper, – an executive at Motorola – helped design the first widely available handheld mobile phone and it was created to provide an innovative solution to making a phone call away from the home, office or a payphone.

Fast forward a few years and technological innovations mean that smartphones now have greater functionalities which make these devices vital to the communication system of any business. Instant communication is expected by many companies and smartphones allow employers to store important files, check and reply to important emails and stay connected while on the go or working remotely.

Computers

In the late 1970s, computers were very slowly beginning to enter the workplace – although they still remained a rare novelty. Today, on the other hand, we carry around more computing power on our smartphones than these early models could ever offer. In fact, according to one study, it’s claimed that a 1-trillion fold increase in performance can be noted over that last 60 years.

Whether your company is online or offline, small or large, no one can deny that in the 21st century, computers are an indispensable asset to any business. They help to increase business efficiency in a number of ways, from document and data storage to communication and messaging tools. Helping with research, production, banking, marketing and team management, they’ve fast become the number one tool in business to generate and manage profits.

But What About Waste & Recycling?

The sad truth is that when it comes to waste management, many companies are still using waste methods that were the same in the 1970’s. Any business owner would surely agree that using an outdated, car, phone or computer would negatively impact their efficiency, so why then, are many still managing their business waste in an old fashioned manner? Sustainability, carbon footprint, waste and plastic minimisation and recycling are all topical terms, therefore it seems strange how innovation in this area remains slow to be implemented.

Products like the innovative recycling bag from ‘Longopac’ Sweden are now stocked in New Zealand. This clever waste system is based on a tube of plastic up to 160 metres long, every bag is 100% full and 3 times stronger and 70% less plastic than a traditional bag. Leading companies are changing to Longopac as this is one of the most efficient, environmentally friendly ways to manage waste in this modern fast changing world.
